The Granny Smith was named after its discoverer, Maria Ann Smith, an Australian gardener. Smith found the seedling growing where she had thrown out some apples. The variety was introduced to market in 1868. It is an all-purpose apple with green skin, firm, crisp flesh, and a pleasantly tart flavor. The tart flavor really lasts, and stays fresh all winter and spring. It is known for keeping its zesty flavor even when it is used for cooking. Partially self-fruitful, but yields can be increased with pollinator of Fuji, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, or crabapple. |
